La lunga strada per lavorare coi fossili e per diventare paleontologo/a

Raccontare questa cosa è un po’ come raccontare la storia della mia vita dal punto di vista lavorativo e, sul mio blog di divulgazione, lo faccio molto volentieri.

La prima cosa da fare per poter lavorare coi fossili è di certo applicarsi nello studio delle materie scientifiche…
Il mio passato di studente è durato parecchio, se considero che mi sono avvicinato ai banchi di scuola come tutti a circa tre anni e mi son portato a casa la laurea a circa 27 ed il tutto è stato abbastanza travagliato!
Di certo ho avuto periodi buoni e periodi meno buoni!
Dopo i classici tre anni di scuola materna, i cinque delle scuole primarie e i tre della medie, ho scelto di diventare perito meccanico presso un ITIS.
Mentre nei primi due anni ho avuto un ottimo rendimento, successivamente ho faticato a sopportare lo ‘stile’ di alcuni miei insegnanti con evidente peggioramento dei miei voti e del mio rendimento. Nonostante tutto, il piacere per la meccanica non l’ho mai perso.
Sono uscito da scuola convinto che non avrei mai più studiato e invece…
Dopo un anno a lavorare un po’ qui e un po’ là, avevo superato un test per un corso di programmazione in linguaggio C che ai tempi era una cosa piuttosto nuova, ma il giorno stesso è arrivata la classica cartolina blu che mi ‘invitava’ a partire per assolvere il servizio di leva militare!
E vabbè. Se ne riparlerà tra un anno!!!

A militare, poco dopo aver compiuto i miei vent’anni, sono arrivati in caserma due ingegneri di 26 e 27 anni. Uno di questi era nella mia cameretta e vedeva che leggevo parecchio. Un giorno in cui ho detto che mi sarebbe piaciuto tornare a studiare mi ha consigliato di iscrivermi in università e mi ha pure convinto!
Cambiamento radicale però: Mi iscrivo a Scienze Naturali che unisce materie di base come Matematica, Fisica, Chimica a quelle delle Scienze Biologiche e della Terra.

Pronti via! E’ novembre del 1994 quando mi presento alle 8 del mattino in aula 100 del settore didattico di via Celoria 20 a Milano! Che ricordi… Lì già dal primo giorno ho incontrato gente con cui avrei diviso poi parecchi anni ed esperienze della mia vita, Ivan, Paola, Antonella, Davide, Daniele, Marco, Alessandra…
Sta di fatto che dopo alcuni anni, a volte spensierati, a volte un po’ meno, sono arrivato alla laurea! E’ stato durante il primo mese di corsi che ho sentito parlare dei fossili.
Di quel che ho studiato poi mi è piaciuto quasi tutto, soprattutto la paleontologia, la botanica, la glaciologia, la fisiologia, la geografia fisica…
Ho scelto comunque di fare una tesi paleontologica che ho concluso con esito discutibile per svariati motivi, ma non certo per la mancanza di impegno ed entusiasmo…
L’ultimo anno di università mi è capitato per caso di dover sostituire una Guida, su alla Grotta dell’Orso del Monte Generoso e di poter aiutare alcuni tesisti tra cui Fausto nello scavo dei fossili di Ursus spelaeus.
Da lì, ho continuato a frequentare l’Università per gli scavi in grotta e soprattutto per la pulitura e preparazione dei fossili che trovavamo…
E’ questo che son diventato: un preparatore di fossili, cioè colui che cerca i fossili e poi li rende disponibili alla studio o all’esposizione.
In effetti poi mi son dedicato anche alla ricerca e preparazione di fossili di altri siti di scavo, ultimo tra questi la ‘Grigna Settentrionale’ coi suoi pesci di più di duecento milioni di anni fa…
Un preparatore poi deve sapere realizzare i calchi, cioè le copie esatte dei fossili. Io ad esempio me la cavo molto bene su quelli in lastra! In 3D non mi ci sono ancora dedicato, ma all’occorrenza imparerò!

Strumenti per la preparazione

Nel mio lavoro, basi di Meccanica sono indispensabili per mantenere efficenti gli strumenti o per costruirne di nuovi. Servono anche basi di Educazione Artistica per la colorazione dei calchi o per garantire un buon risultato estetico qualora il fossile venisse esposto…
Ultimo ma non meno importante è anche indispensabile saper dialogare con gli studenti o gli appassionati che si incrociano abbondantemente svolgendo questo lavoro.
Questo è il curriculum che viene richiesto normalmente ad un preparatore in un Museo o Università statunitense…senza dimenticare le gambe buone e la possibilità di trasportare carichi di qualche decina di chili anche su terreni molto ripidi!!!

Per diventare veri Paleontologi??
Bisogna studiare i fossili, cioè descriverli, collocarli nell’albero filogenetico delle specie e cercare di ricostruire il loro ambiente e per quanto possibile la loro vita…
Di solito io non mi occupo di questo, ma mi piace molto chiacchierare coi paleontologi e dire la mia riguardo ai loro studi, soprattutto sui fossili preparati da me e che sento quasi sempre un po’ miei!

Lo trovo un bel modo di lavorare e di stimolare la mente!
Ogni volta nella ricerca e preparazione c’è qualche problema da risolvere e mi piace cogliere la sfida che ne deriva inventando sempre qualcosa per uscirne bene …possibilmente!!!
