Paleodays 2017 – Congresso della Società Paleontologica Italiana ad Anagni

Anche quest’anno alla fine di maggio, più precisamente nei giorni 24, 25 e 26, la Società Paleontologica Italiana ha indetto il congresso annuale dei suoi soci. La sede del congresso di quest’anno è Anagni, città in provincia di Frosinone che, oltre alla sua importanza storica e artistica (ha dato i natali a ben quattro papi tra cui Bonifacio VIII, e il suo centro storico è uno dei migliori esempi dell’architettura e dell’arte medievale), si trova anche nelle vicinanze di numerosi siti di interesse paleontologico risalenti a varie epoche, e in virtù di ciò è la cornice ideale per il congresso organizzato quest’anno dal comitato capitanato dall’Università La Sapienza di Roma.

Com’è ormai tradizione annuale, se sono qui a parlarvene è perché ho avuto il piacere di partecipare alle Giornate di Paleontologia, anche se questa volta c’è mancato poco che dovessi dare forfait a causa degli impegni scolastici ma soprattutto della miopia di certe figure dell’amministrazione scolastica che non erano convinte della validità e dell’importanza di questo evento. Non voglio dilungarmi oltremodo sulla questione perché non è né il luogo né l’argomento, diciamo solo che per fortuna tutto si è risolto nel migliore dei modi e questo post ne è la dimostrazione. In ogni modo ci sarà modo di parlare in futuro del rapporto tra paleontologia e scuola italiana…

Il legame tra paleontologia e scuola è stato anche uno degli argomenti trattati durante la tavola rotonda di Palaeontologist in Progress tenutasi martedì 23 maggio. In questo devo ammettere di avere una certa misura di responsabilità poiché uno dei temi di discussione è stato proposto dal sottoscritto, partendo dai vergognosi errori riportati sul libro di scienze adottato dalla scuola dove ho insegnato per espandersi in una riflessione più ampia sul se e il come sia eventualmente possibile collaborare con le case editrici per revisionare i testi di modo che siano al passo con le scoperte più recenti, o quantomeno non raccontino autentiche castronerie ai ragazzi. Devo dire che mi ha fatto piacere vedere come un argomento che pensavo avrebbe lasciato il tempo che trova abbia invece dato il via a una lunga e stimolante discussione che si è poi sviluppata fino a toccare la questione, mai attuale come in questi ultimi tempi, del riconoscimento della figura del paleontologo da parte degli enti preposti alla gestione dei beni culturali, che in Italia annoverano anche i fossili.

La Sala della Ragione, mercoledì mattina in attesa dell’inizio dei lavori

Con la giornata di mercoledì 24 maggio ha avuto inizio il congresso vero e proprio nello spazio allestito nella Sala della Ragione all’interno del municipio di Anagni. Dopo i saluti delle autorità, comprensibilmente orgogliose che la loro città sia stata scelta come sede per riunire la comunità paleontologica italiana, sono cominciati ufficialmente i lavori con la comunicazione inaugurale a invito il cui relatore, Fabio Massimo Petti del Museo delle Scienze di Trento, ha parlato dei dinosauri del Lazio meridionale. Questo tema è strettamente legato al contesto dell’area di Anagni, poiché proprio in quest’area sono noti non solo alcuni siti a impronte (i cui ritrovamenti hanno fatto parte dell’escursione della seconda giornata di congresso, e non a caso questa comunicazione è stata una sorta di introduzione a quanto avremmo visto l’indomani), ma anche resti ossei di dinosauro di recente pubblicazione e di cui abbiamo già parlato alcuni mesi fa.
