Da molto tempo sto pensando a questa cosa e alle varie dinamiche che regolano idee e comportamenti di massa, nel caso specifico cercherò di analizzare il progresso del pensiero scientifico.

L’idea ha cominciato a venirmi anni fa quando lessi una grossa sciocchezza sulla carta stampata di un quotidiano di elevata diffusione ma non è solo di questo che voglio parlarvi quindi vi invito a proseguire la lettura.

L’argomento in questione riguardava il mio lavoro in modo estremamente diretto. Non si parlava solo di argomenti relativi o vicini al mio lavoro. Era una cosa su cui ho lavorato anche io, su cui ho messo le mani insieme ad un equipe di scienziati e tecnici (io ero uno dei tecnici) e dall’articolo si percepiva qualcosa di estremamente lontano dalla realtà e per giunta gran parte era incomprensibile e privo di logica.

Ovviamente la maggior parte della gente che ha letto, ha creduto vero quel che ha letto. Uno di solito non si pone nemmeno il problema… Se sta scritto lì, allora è vero!

Chiacchierando di altri argomenti con esperti del campo, mi son reso conto di come spesso, nella maggior parte dei casi, la realtà sia travisata ed uno pensa:”E’ qui che subentra il metodo scientifico” così non si sbaglia.

Studio solo pubblicazioni su riviste scientifiche, frequento congressi, seminari e mi documento nel modo giusto

Questa cosa però non è del tutto vera, soprattutto per le discipline che si occupano del passato, o comunque dello studio di fenomeni non replicabili in un laboratorio o nella vita di tutti i giorni… Parlo per esempio dell’ecologia di un individuo di 200 milioni di anni fa oppure dell’immersione di una placca sotto l’altra, delle dinamiche del mantello o della crosta terrestre più profonda, della nascita/sviluppo di una stella…

Lo studio è quanto mai complicato e a volte passa attraverso intuizioni geniali ma anche fallimenti e “buchi nell’acqua”, ipotesi non verificate o ancor peggio fuorvianti che dirigono le ricerche in una direzione infruttuosa, opposta e controproducente… In quest’ultimo caso però si scoprirà che gli sforzi sono stati vani solo quando verrà verificata la non corrispondenza di dati e risultati solitamente in favore di una diversa “strada”, vedi ad esempio la teoria “Multiregionale” rispetto all’ “Out of Africa” nello studio dell’evoluzione umana (Vedi articolo di Davide Bertè), per non parlare dei falsi (non così comuni per fortuna) come l’uomo di Piltdown studiato nl contesto dell’Evoluzione Umana…

Scrivo questo perchè il tutto riguarda anche le pubblicazioni scientifiche, i libri di testo, i siti di divulgazione come scienzafacile.it.

Mi è capitato spesso di ascoltare spiegazioni di fenomeni o ritrovamenti più che discutibili e riportati dagli studenti come verità certe senza un minimo di variabili alternative (capita nella Paleontologia, nelle varie branche della Geologia e in altre discipline scientifiche e non)

Quando si studia su un articolo scientifico e anche quando si è gli autori, indipendentemente da chi l’ha scritto o lo stia scrivendo, bisogna rendersi conto che si è di fronte ad un grande o ad un piccolo mattone che servirà a costruire una colonna portante oppure la farà crollare perchè il mattone è inconsistente o potrebbe essere anche solo una macchia su un modello quasi ottimo.

In caso negativo, la selezione di quale idea andrà avanti la farà il mondo scientifico che pian piano assorbirà come fosse nutrimento la nuova argomentazione oppure la eliminerà pian piano come una scheggia dalla pelle…

Anche la critica (*) del pubblico sarà importante, ma solo di quello che si chiede il perchè delle cose fino in fondo (caratteristica piuttosto comune tra gli scienziati anche se non sempre ovvia).

* Per “critica” ovviamente non intendo l’atto di criticare negativamente ma soprattutto l’atto del chiedersi (o chiedere) il perchè e se la cosa abbia una logica infallibile o semmai discutibile o addirittura assurda…

Un perchè chiesto al momento giusto può rafforzare o far crollare inesorabilmente una tesi.

Un perchè può anche creare problemi di altro genere: ok! Vi racconto un episodio che ho vissuto in prima persona…

Qualche anno fa, durante alcuni seminari seguiti da studenti, professori universitari e altri come me,  ho formulato una semplice domanda al docente che presentava un progetto ambizioso e finanziatissimo sulla previsione dei terremoti e ho messo in dubbio la logica di una parte del progetto stesso.
