Nei giorni 24, 25 e 26 maggio si è tenuta la XII edizione delle Giornate di Paleontologia organizzate dalla Società Paleontologica Italiana. Si tratta di un evento che ogni anno riunisce i membri della società e in cui vengono presentati, sotto forma di comunicazione orale o di poster, i risultati della ricerca svolta dalla comunità paleontologica italiana.
Il convegno di quest’anno è stato organizzato dall’Università di Catania, che ha ospitato i partecipanti nella sua sede di Corso Italia presso l’aula magna del Palazzo delle Scienze, e Scienzafacile era presente con una piccola delegazione, rappresentata da chi scrive come semplice uditore, e dall’amico e co-collaboratore del blog Davide Bertè che ha presentato una comunicazione sui resti di Canis etruscus dal sito villafranchiano di Pantalla (Perugia) e un poster sulla fauna a mammiferi del Galeriano rinvenuta nella grotta del Cerè presso Ceredo (Verona).
La prima giornata di convegno è stata interamente dedicata alle comunicazioni orali, che hanno toccato numerosi argomenti: foraminiferi, brachiopodi, mammiferi, tracce fossili di ogni tipo (fra cui ben tre presentazioni dedicate ai tetrapodi mesozoici che il sottoscritto ha particolarmente apprezzato), e vari studi paleoecologici riguardanti foraminiferi, molluschi, briozoi e altri organismi.
Durante la pausa pranzo il convegno si è poi spostato all’orto botanico di Catania dove il direttore, oltre a offrire un ricco buffet, ha guidato una breve ma interessante visita alla struttura. L’orto ospita molte varietà di piante, riunite in base all’affinità tassonomica sia in aiuole all’aperto che all’interno della serra climatizzata. Degni di nota sono gli allestimenti dei vari ambienti tipici del paesaggio siciliano (macchia mediterranea, duna, acquitrino e così via) popolati dalle specie vegetali tipiche dell’isola, con il pregio di riunire in un’area ridotta le differenti associazioni osservabili in Sicilia.
Dopo la sessione pomeridiana di comunicazioni, la prima giornata di convegno si è degnamente conclusa con la cena sociale tenuta in uno dei molti ristoranti del centro di Catania.
Nella giornata di venerdì si è tenuta l’escursione, che ha toccato due località in provincia di Messina. La prima meta è stata il sito di Acquedolci, dove sono stati studiati tre depositi a vertebrati terrestri del Pleistocene. Il più antico è un deposito a Hippopotamus pentlandi, una specie di ippopotamo endemica della Sicilia, databile al cosiddetto Complesso Faunistico a Elephas mnaidriensis, uno dei cinque complessi faunistici a vertebrati pleistocenici riconosciuti in Sicilia che corrisponde al tardo Pleistocene medio, circa 350.000 anni fa. Peculiarità del deposito, accumulatosi al fondo di un bacino lacustre ai piedi di una falesia di calcari giurassici, è che i resti sono stati conservati in situ, protetti dalle intemperie per mezzo di coperture trasparenti che ne permettono l’osservazione.
Gli altri due depositi di Acquedolci sono più recenti, e si trovano nella grotta di San Teodoro che si apre alcune decine di metri più in alto rispetto al deposito a ippopotami. Dei due depositi, il più antico è datato al Complesso Faunistico di Grotta San Teodoro – Pianetti (definito proprio grazie all’associazione rinvenuta nella grotta), e contiene resti dei grandi mammiferi endemici della Sicilia, tra cui Palaeoloxodon mnaidriensis, Bos primigenius siciliae, Equus hydruntinus e Crocuta crocuta speleaea. Quest’ultimo taxon in particolare, che altri non è se non la iena, è di particolare importanza poiché è stato il principale responsabile del trasporto e dell’accumulo delle ossa nel deposito, come indicano i segni lasciati su molti dei resti di grandi mammiferi rinvenuti nella grotta.
Sono noti anche resti di micromammiferi, importanti perché testimoniano la sostituzione della fauna endemica da parte di taxa continentali come l’arvicola e il riccio.
Il più recente dei tre depositi comprende resti umani appartenuti a sette individui, attualmente conservati presso i musei di Palermo, Firenze e Milano. Sei individui giacevano in uno strato argilloso sotto a un livello di ocra rossa, mentre il settimo e’ stato rinvenuto nel Leggi tutto “Paleodays – Relazione dalle Giornate di Paleontologia della Società Paleontologica Italiana”
