Immaginate dei vulcani in miniatura, sostituite la lava con il fango ed il gioco è fatto! No, non è il riassunto dell’ultima puntata di Art Attack ma uno dei più curiosi fenomeni geologici esistenti in Italia.

Le salse eruttive traggono origine dalla risalita di fanghi argillosi salmastri, che nel tempo edificano le strutture a cono che tanto ricordano gli edifici vulcanici. Il termine salsa deriva, infatti, dall’estrema sintesi della descrizione del fenomeno stesso: “risalita di acque salmastre”, che diviene “sorgenti salmastre” ed, infine, “salse”.

 

La genesi del fango è dovuta alla presenza di depositi di idrocarburi, principalmente gassosi (metano) e in misura minore liquidi (petrolio), in contatto con la superficie attraverso alcune fratture della roccia. Il gas, che nel giacimento si trova ad una certa pressione, fuoriesce sospingendo le acque sotterranee. Queste stemperano le argille che, Leggi tutto “Le Salse Eruttive”

Gran parte dei lettori di scienzafacile sanno che mi capita spesso di frequentare il dipartimento di Scienze della Terra milanese…

Poco prima di arrivare, oppure appena lascio quel luogo, sono spesso infastidito da un ‘sottile’ olezzo di escrementi canini… Un giorno, percorrevo questa ‘romantica’ passeggiata con la mia amica Chiara e, mentre mi lamentavo del comportamento dei presunti padroni dei cani maleducati, Chiara si rivolge a me sorridendo e mi dice:”Ma Stefano? E’ il Ginkgo che ha questo odore!!!”

Chiara mi insegna sempre qualcosa e questa volta le è toccato insegnarmi che il ‘fossile vivente’ che sta nella piazza antistante al dipartimento, ha l’odore degli escrementi di cane!!!

Cosa sono i fossili viventi? Sono organismi che sono rimasti invariati da moltissimo tempo. Mentre le altre forme di vita si evolvevano e si evolvono, loro sono rimasti uguali o quasi. I loro fossili molto antichi (fino a centinaia di milioni di anni) sono più o meno uguali o molto simili agli esemplari attuali…

Esempi classici sono proprio il Ginkgo biloba, Il Nautlus dell’Oceano Indiano, I Triops (crostacei delle ‘mie’ risaie), i Limulus, le Latimeria, La Lingula, gli Squali, gli Equiseti, le Felci, Cianobatteri e moltissimi altri ancora…

Non sono un botanico e non mi spingo oltre nella determinazione. Già Crocus e Colchicum si confondono facilmente se non si è del mestiere.
